Short Recap: For anyone that has ever been a manager, you know its not easy. And being a good manager is even more difficult, so this book is geared around how organizations can use progress in the work as a motivation that leads to better inner work life (commonly called engagement). That then leads to more productivity and happier employees. . The author notes that inner work life is based on 3 parts; perceptions, emotions and motivation/drive. She also notes that bad or negative events even when small are much more impactful on inner work life than good events. That inner work life balance leads to increased creativity, productivity and collegiality. . Application to Business: Thinking about small setbacks having an outside impact make sense with what I have seen and even experienced. For that reason, making real progress on a longer-term program or on work that the employee finds valuable creates positive emotions. However, a minor setback on that same project can lead to self-doubt. . My biggest take away is that we need to keep employees on the right track by being able to show them the progress they have made. And even on bad days being able to document some progress that was made toward your project or goals keeps the inner work life positive. . Application to Life: The idea that we need to make progress is universal whether in business or in personal life. In raising my kids, I want them to learn that things don’t always go the way they expect but that you can still enjoy the small victory. I think that we can all learn from that. . .
