How To Speak So That People Want To Listen Julian Treasure ted Talk Summary

This is a quick summary of Julian Treasure’s talk done in 2014 where he talks about the importance of avoiding habits that will make people NOT want to listen to you and how to make your speech more pleasant.. . NEW! – Check out our Facebook page! https://www.facebook.com/QuickTalksInfo/ . . 7 Deadly sins of speaking: . 1. Gossip – Speaking ill of somebody not present. 2. Judging – Very hard to listen to somebody if you know you’re being judged. 3. Negativity – Not enjoyable to listen to negative things. 4. Complaining – The simple spread of misery. 5. Excuses – Nobody appreciates someone who can’t take responsibility for their actions. 6. Exaggeration – Cheapens language and can feel like outright lying sometimes. 7. Dogmatism – Confusion of facts with opinions. Being bombarded with opinions is something no one is interested in unless they happen to have the same opinions. . HAIL. Honesty – Be simple and straight. Authenticity – Be yourself. Integrity – Be your word. Love – Wish people well. . Register – Difference in speaking from your nose, throat or chest. Most people who speak from their nose are considered annoying while speaking from the throat is the norm. Speaking from the chest indicates power and authority. . Timbre – This is the way your voice feels – smooth, rich, shrill. It can make a voice sexy or soothing. While we would agree Vin Diesel and Morgan Freeman have deep voices, they have very different timbres . . Prosody – The variation in intonation in your speech. Nobody likes NO variation in intonation cause you sound monotone like a robot. Too predictable prosity (like upspeak) can be annoying. . Pace – You can show excitement by speaking quickly or slow down to show seriousness. You can also insert bits of silence which are very powerful. . Pitch – (Different from register) Usually raising your pitch indicates arousal – anger, excitement etc.. . Volume – Control of this is very important. You can get really excited or you can lower your volume to get people to listen closely. Keeping your volume loud at all times is a bit jarring, so control of this is important.. . Julian also talks about some great warm ups you can use before you go to speak, so make sure to check out the full 10 minute talk here:. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eIho2S0ZahI. .
